The Refuge Approved to Provide SNAP E&T Training

The Refuge received approval in 2019 to serve as an approved training site for the SNAP E&T program. The program in Tennessee includes the following:

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Employment and Training helps SNAP participants obtain job readiness skills. Eligible participants are provided with job development services that may include job search assistance, training or additional education and placement services. Funds may also be provided for transportation and associated resources like books, tools, and supplies. The primary goal of the SNAP Employment and Training Program is to assist individuals in reaching their employment potential and becoming totally independent of public assistance.

SNAP E&T TN is under the auspices of the Tennessee Department of Labor in association with the Department of Human Services. The Refuge is officially approved by both agencies to serve as a Third Party Training Partner to deliver career training in:
  • Job Readiness/Success Skills (Soft Skills)
  • Client Relations
  • MIG Welding (in partnership with Cleveland State Community College--read more in next article below)
SNAP recipients who quality for Employment Training receive a partial reimbursement for the costs of training. As a Third Party Partner, The Refuge receives 45% reimbursement for each qualified participant of approved charges. Reimbursement is not available for all training costs, but does cover a significant number. This is a great incentive for those who are looking for assistance to find employment or train for new employment skills.

Our participation in the program is the result of a long-term relationship with University of Tennessee Extensions. UT Extensions is the primary agent to deliver the SNAP program in East Tennessee. One way of accomplishing this is to partner with Third Parties for training programs already in place and with a record of success. The fact that we have been granted this partnership is a significant stamp of approval on our training program. We are extremely grateful to Justin Thomas and Clint Cummings at UTK Extensions for their confidence in us and assistance in gaining final approval.

This partnership also indicates that our program has been approved by the Tennessee Department of Labor and the Department of Human Services. We are greatly honored and humbled by these endorsements.

Currently, The Refuge is the only Third Party Partner currently at full operation in Tennessee. More are in the approval process, but we are the first to be approved and begin operation. Thanks must be offered to a Refuge staff that has made this possible. A special thanks to Brian Stewart who has worked tirelessly to make this a smooth transition and quality program.
