Our grant proposal to the Cleveland Rotary Foundation was approved! The Cleveland Rotary Foundation awarded us $7,303.01 for the reconstruction and enhancement of our 180 Tutoring Center for Adult Readers. These funds helped create three new centers of learning for students to use 3 additional days per week on top of their one-on-one session. The Grant funded renovation of the Tutoring Center, addition of 4 computers, 2 computer tables, online curriculum cost, tangible curriculum cost, and a high interest low reading level library of books.
The new centers will provide individual learning on computers for reading, spelling, & comprehension practice. Teacher led review sessions on specific reading skills (vowel sounds, blends, prefixes, spelling, etc.) and a group book club (teacher led) with a group of 4 or more students reading the same book together to develop fluency & comprehension through discussion, inferences, and predictions. Once students are fluently reading the book in the book club, those who are willing, will have opportunity to go to a local partner elementary school and read the book to a Kindergarten or 1st grade class. This will build the confidence of our adult learners but also encourage reading for primary students.
One reading student was ecstatic about this change. She stated, “I love that! I would definitely come more. I think the group portion would help build my confidence and I would love to read to the children.”
